Faith when it's Foggy
A devotional to kick off your week
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Psalm 119:105 KJV
The other morning, I woke up to a dense fog weather advisory and soon realized the meteorologists weren’t kidding. I was thankful to be driving somewhere familiar, because I couldn’t see more than a few feet ahead of me. The streets I travel down every day were unrecognizable without a full view of my surroundings. I had to drive slowly, scan the roads and sidewalks continually, and look for bright lights to guide me.
Today we find ourselves at the precipice of a new year. Some of you may have a clear vision for what 2026 will bring, outlined goals and excitement for what lies ahead. But others of you may feel foggy and unsure. Maybe you’re in the midst of medical treatments or court dates, and you’re hopeful, but uncertain, about reaching the final one. Maybe there’s a strained relationship and it’s unclear if reconciliation is on the horizon. Life’s challenges and hard emotions like sadness, grief, and anger have a way of making things foggy. What once seemed certain can become shaky.
Faith that survives trusts the fog will lift.
The nice thing about fog is that it eventually lifts. Our hard life circumstances work the same way, and the way we survive them is the same way we drive through dense fog. We slow down and make space to pray. We invite the Holy Spirit into our lives and look for evidence of what he’s doing. And we look for bright lights—people with a strong faith—to mentor and guide us. We listen to them as they lend their strength and remind us that despite how it feels, fog doesn’t last forever.
Breath Prayer
Inhale: Help me hold on…
Exhale: … until the fog lifts.

At age 75, my younger brother just endured a hospital visit that almost became his last. It truly was a time when what seemed secure became shaky. This weekly devotional reading clearly captured my attitude toward 2026. And I love the format; it is like the one I use in my writings, EVERYDAY PARABLES—featuring illustrations from life and applied to Scripture.
I love your interplay between “foggy” as a physical description and as a metaphor suggesting the difficulty of discerning what lies ahead in 2026. In this context, other metaphors such as “bright lights” suggest points of orientation that God may provide along the way. Cool beans! 😊
